Silent prayer – that’s a bit of an oxymoron. Prayer, as I know it, is quite verbal. It may not be audible but it is still full of words. There may be words of praise, adoration, confession, requests for help and for stuff – plenty of words.
It seems a bit odd to me that we rush into the presence of an almighty God, spew out a litany of requests – sprinkled with some praise for good measure – and then go about our business assuming God will take care of the things we have just dumped before His throne.
I am learning more and more about the value of silence in the presence of God – treating the relationship with Him as I would a relationship with a really good friend. There are times when it is most appropriate to be quiet so as to listen to what He has to say.
He really does have plenty to say. It takes some practice to listen. The most difficult part is just being silent long enough for Him to speak. I am finding that it is best to give Him opportunity to speak before I say anything. It gives Him an opportunity to direct the conversation instead of me being in control all of the time. What a novel idea – since He is God.
